2nd Symposium "Indigenous Peoples at the Un: from the experience of the first delegates to the empowerment of younger generations" - 16-19 June 2015

The second Symposium "Indigenous Peoples at the United Nations: From the Experience of the First Delegates to the Empowerment of Younger Generations" will take place from on 16-19 June 2015 at the United Nations (Room XIV) in Geneva.

The organization of this Symposium originates from a recommendation of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues of the United Nations1 and follows a previous symposium held in September 2013. During the four days of the Symposium, about 20 First Indigenous delegates - most of whom participated in the first two Conferences on Indigenous Peoples at the United Nations and did not come in 2013 - will recall their first steps in the international fora in a dialogue to transfer their experience to younger generations. This transfer will be videotaped by seven young Indigenous delegates, previously trained in the use of video, so that they can record themselves the testimony of the elders, during and after the Symposium, in Geneva and their regions.

The Symposium will also lay the foundation for an assessment of the 38 years of this international process and its impact at the local level. Other topics will be discussed such as sovereignty over natural resources, decolonization, perspectives and expectations of the new generation, future work with the UN, the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples in 2014, the creation of an International Council of Indigenous Peoples.

The Symposium will begin with an Official Opening Ceremony on June 16, from 11 am to 1 pm and will continue from 3 pm to 6 pm. The following days, the sessions will take place from 9 am to 1 pm and from 3 pm to 6 pm, until June 19.
